Mercy Nickerson m lst Wm Mitchell, 2nd James Griffith
Mercy Nickerson, dau of Wm and Mercy (Williams) Nickerson, married ca 1689 to William Mitchell by whom she had only one child. It appears he died ca 1692 and she married 2nd to James Griffith (son of William and Lydia Griffith).
In 1710 James and Mercy Griffith left Cape Cod and purchased land in Kent Co DE (quite near land later bought by Jeremiah Nickerson). They sold this land one year later, but remained in Kent Co where Mercy apparently died before 1713 when James Griffith had remarried to the widow of Nathaniel Tomlin, another immigrant from Cape Cod.James and this second wife were administrators of Nathaniel Tomlin's estate.
By 1718 James Griffith had died when two of his younger children (James b ca 1705;Elizabeth born ca 1707) were indentured to William and Mary Newell.
It has long been known that one of Mercy (Williams) Nickerson's daughters went to Delaware as it was mentioned in her funeral memorial by Rev Joseph Lord.Different accounts say she took 7 or 11 children (the lower number probably correct) with her when she went there. It was once believed that it was Mercy's daughter Elizabeth, widow of William Cahoon, who went to Delaware but I have found no evidence she or any of her children went to Delaware and the dates do not work for her to have had so many children.Since the early writers did not realize James Griffith and Mercy had gone to Delaware,I suspect Griffith's wife is the "daughter" referred to by Rev Lord.
Any thoughts or further documentation on the above will be welcomed.
