Henry Nicholls from London b. circa 1852

Can anyone make suggestions as to how I identify Henry's parents. He is my gt. gt. grandfather( maternal ). Henry was born in London circa 1851- 1852. At some stage he emigrated to Australia and married Fanny Dalton 6/2/1873 in Sydney. They had : Alice Maude b. 1876, Ellen b. 1874 and Ethel b. 1878. Henry was a mariner as listed on his marriage certificate and was a poiceman for a short time with the NSW police force in 1877. The records just state that he was born in England and his marriage certificate does not say who his parents were. On his daughter Alice Maude's birth certificate, it also just says mariner, born in London.
There are 3 possibilities for him on the 1871 British census - one a "Boy under detention !" aged 19, stationed on the " Cornwall " in Purfleet, Essex, one a boarder aged 20 in Shoreditch, London and one a private at the Colchester Calvary barracks, Essex, aged 21.
My first choice would be the first mentioned, as he is the only sailor. Any suggestions please !
Regards
Janice
