Here's a challenge for serious researchers.
I have the first Mr Nicholas ever as being
William Nicholas 1560-1623 Llansoy Monmouthshire
son of Nicholas ap William ap Gryffud
I say he was the first because, before him no one took a surname. His father was just Nicholas, grandfather just William and great grandfather just Gryffud
This first Mr Nicholas married Catherine Powell the first one to have a surname Powell. Actually her grandfather was Harry ap Howell so she should have been Catherine Howell but the fashion had only just come in so there were no rules.
