Not a William after all.
His father served with General Winfield Scott in the Mexican War. So I bet he got the name there.
In 1880 He was found Married to Margaret Miner in Franklin Co. Texas.
He always seemed to spell his last name NICHELSON
In 1930 living with James family Widower Hugo, Ok.

1870 census Maury Co. Tn.
James M. Nicholson b 1828 GA
Caroline b 1840 (step-mother)
William Henry b 1852
Winfield Scott b 1858
Jackson Vanburen b 1860
Mary Virginia b 1861
