Your "brick wall" remark struck a chord - I have one of those slippery ancestors as well. You may have seen this already, but there is a family group sheet in the LDS file on the Net for Caroline Rowe and James Ladd. No mention of parents, but it does say that she was born in Brentwood, Strafford county NH.

I checked my World Family Tree census indexes for Brentwood for 1830, and found -
Benjamin p. 032
James, p. 030 - also listed for 1837
James, Jr., p. 030
Jesse, p. 027
Reuben, listed for 1837

1840, Brentwood
Benjamin, p. 475
Reuben, p. 475
James, p. 474

There were none listed for Brentwood in 1850, and unfortunately none listed for Biddeford ME, either.

In World Family Tree CD's, there is a family of Rowes that traces to Robert, b. 1684, d. 1761 in Kensington, NH. Then I found a Jeremiah, who m. Judith Prescott in Kensington, and their first child was born in Brentwood in 1740/41. So if you haven't checked already, you might see if you could locate a history of Brentwood.

I couldn't find a Caroline in this group, unfortunately. I forgot to check the 1860 census, though, so will go back in and see if there are any Rowes in Biddeford.
