According to *Maine Probate Extracts* for York County, Robert Eliot Gerrish's will was dated 10 October 1776 and was probated on 22 March 1781. He left most of his estate to his wife MARY, with his daughters Abigail Gerrish (Mrs. Roger Mitchell) and Sarah Gerrish (Mrs. Roger Deering) to inherit equally if Mary died before he did.

Robert is said by Everett S. Stackpole on page 444 of *Old Kittery, [Maine], and Her Families* to have married Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner on 15 Nov. 1749.

Elizabeth may also have had the name "Mary," or the wife Robert had at death may have been a second wife.

The title "Mrs." sometimes was used to refer to an older single woman or a woman of independent means. It meant "Mistress" and did not have the connotation the word "mistress" has today. A stepmother sometimes was referred to as just "mother," especially if she reared her stepchildren.

P. S. - I inadvertently included mention of Robert Eliot Gerrish's descendant Robert Gerrish Safford in previous posts here.
