First, let me say that I am support the idea of the free exchange of ideas and data. I don't like the subscription sites and don't pay for any of them. Second, I couldn't quite understand what this statement of Genforum's Agreement of Use means: "While you will retain ownership of the copyright in the Materials posted by you, you agree that all Materials posted by you shall become part of a database on GenForum, and that we will own the compilation copyright in that database."
Would their ownership of the "compliation copyright" include them putting it in an online database or can that include CD databases for sale? I would love to have Genforum spell it out! I would have assumed that it only meant they are free from legal liabilities of what people post. I would never have read that they can sell the info. So, I suppose I need to find out more!
This seems to be a public domain issue. Things that are published become part of the public domain? But how and when and for how long? Someone help me understand.
