It's been my experience that many "Johannas" started using Anna, Annie, Ann as their first name discarding the more old and European names. Censuses seem to have written down whatever the people told them - not legal names, etc.
Makes our search ever so complicated. I have two German branches and they usually have two middle names, and "go by" any of three names and often nicknames in diff. censuses.
Plus, all those nephews, cousins, brothers with the same names! Makes our sleuthing fun. Good luck.
As you may know, sometimes people are not on censuses and just disappear. Joyce
