Hi Thomas,
Thank you for responding, I really appreciate that. The census information I have is the 1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. This one lists 11 children, the youngest hadn't been born yet. I also have the 1860 and 1880 US Censuses. We don't know when Aaron went up to Canada, but based on the knowledge that Tryphena was born in Canada and 11 of their 12 kids were born up there, we figure Aaron and Tryphena were married up there. They came back to the US in 1852-53. The Portrait and Biographical Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan and Van Buren Counties, Michigan has a bio on their 11th child William. In regards to Aaron it states that he was "a native of New Hampshire" and that "the early part of his wedded life was spent in Canada, but when his son of whom we write about was about 4 years old, he removed with his family to LaGrange County, Ind...." It goes on to say that from LaGrange, they moved to Decatur Township, Van Buren County in 1860 and from there to Arlington Twnsp where he died in 1889. This source states: "William Phillips, the subject of this biographical review, is the eleventh in order of birth of a family of 12 children, of whom 10 are still living..." It goes on to list the living children, their spouses and a few tidbits of each. The children's names are:
Amasa H b. ? Canada
Charles A. b. April 2,1831 Canada d. May 4, 1917 Arlington, Van Buren Co. MI (my G-G Grandfather)
Horace A. b. June 8, 1832 Canada
Mary Ann b. Feb 1834 Canada
Sarah b. abt 1835 Canada
Adeline b. Oct. 1839 Ontario, Canada
Aaron b. Feb. 1840 Canada
Isaac Whiting b. 1842 Canada
Cordelia (Dilly) b. March 6, 1844, Ontario, Canada
Eliza Jane b. 1846 Canada
William b. Aug 12, 1848 Waterford, Canada
Alexander b. July 1853 Indiana
Some of those birthyears may be off by a year or two, not sure. Records vary slightly. All records that I have found EXCEPT 2 concerning Aaron say that he was born in 1801. The 2 exceptions put his birth around 1796-7...the 1851 Canadian Census and a user submitted Family Group on the LDS site.
My Father, who is 85 years old, took a DNA test with the Phillips Worldwide Project. We found his earliet known ancestor to be a James Phillips b. Jan 1, 1661-62 in Taunton, Mass. So it is this gap between Aaron and James that I am trying to fill...as Aaron was b. in New Hampshire I thought posting to this board might help. I have a picture of Aaron and Tryphena but all it gives is their names, no dates or place. Thank you again for your help :-)Julee
