Education :Gilmanton Academy in N.H. andlatertaught school.
Service in Civil War: Enlistedfor the 15 th New Hampshire Volunteers 1862----appointed Third Sergeant.He regiment sent to New York..he was detached and worked as commissary sergeant onboardtransport at General Banks’ expedition to New Orleans andserved there as commissary sergeant until he was stricken with fever, he was sent to the hospital.After he felt better he rejoined his regiment in Carrollton,Lousisana employed in the regimental adjutant’s office…..Autumn 1863 he was mustered out from military service returning to NH for a invalid year.
Immigration westward--Year 1864 Mr. Hill managed the business department of the Galena Illinois Gazette, who was run by a former acquaintance from his home state. After 2 years he made the acquaintance of U.S. Grant and his brother Orville, he was employed for one year with Grant & Burke in the leather and saddle hardware business at Chicago, IL. Entering the firm of Davis, Medary & Hill , who acquired La Crosse branch of Grant & Burke business. Mr. Hill spent 2 years.
Married: Mary E. Tyler only daughter of Thomas B. Tyler of Sparta ,WI
Date of Marriage December 8,1868.
Business--Disposed of his interests in La Crosse,WI in 1871 he removed to Sparta engaging in wholesale grocery business, later entered the pharmacy business. In 1874 he united with Thomas B. Tyler under the firm name of Tyler & Hill , in the real estate and loan business.He spent therest of his life at this business. In 1874 he was Director in the Bank of Sparta, was Vice-president in 1883 and president from 1886 until the time of his death in 1904.
Organizations --Regent of the Normal Schools by Govenor Peck. As a Democrathe was a delegate or alternate delegate to national conventions. He was a member and past commander of the John W. Lynn Post of the Grand Army of the Republic.He wasMasonand also a member of the Knights of Pythias and other orders.
Children: Two children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Hill , Louis Tand Kittie who is the wife of A.W. Barney …..all residents of Sparta,Wisconsin.Louis T. Hill and A.W. Barney were vice-presidents of the Bank of Sparta.
Mr. Ira A. Hill was a representative citizen and successful business man. He served on the school board, and the city council and board of supervisors during his life.
