Hi Virginia,
I have chased around looking for a "Tufts" Thomas who also came from somewhere in NH who also was supposedly American Indian. He married a Fanney BOOTMAN and she too was supposed to be Indian. They might be the grandparents of my 4th grt. grandmother Hannah Thomas.
My story is all over these boards about my 3rd grt. grandfather who was (so family stories tell), a Passamaquoddy Indian. He was an Indian doctor in Lowell, MA from around 1860 to 1876/77 (when he died).
I have been told that this "Tufts" THOMAS may have changed his name around to better blend in among the whites.
This is purely speculation but there are others who have heard that this Tufts Thomas and his wife Fanney were Indians as well.
This might be something for you to check on too....the surname THOMAS.It was used a lot by the Indians from Canada and Maine and is sometimes seen as Toma, Tomah, and Tomer in their own language.
Tufts Thomas moved from NH to the Gorham, Cumberland Co., Maine area perhaps in the late 1700's.Tufts was born c1740 in NH, where I don't know.
I hope this is somewhat helpful to you.
If you find anything about this couple Please if you would Post the info.
I have searched for a long time to find out anything about them.
Good Luck in your searching.
