In the 1900 census of Berlin. Coos Cty:
John McCarty- b. July 1855- age 44- married 20 years. Self and parents born Canada/English- stonecutter.
Mary A.-wife- born July 1861- age 38-self and parents born Canada/English. 6 children born-3 living.
Herbert A. b. Aug. 1883- age 16-b. NH
Idella J. b. Aug. 1885- age 14-b. NH
Julia C (Julia hard to read- could be Julianne)- b. Sept 1893- age 6.
John and Mary Ann came to US in 1880. He was Naturalized. Wives automatically were when husbands were in those days.
In 1880 I found John McCarty, age 23- b. CAN. in "Thompson and Merserves Purchase- Base Mt. Washington- Coos". He was a Railroad Fireman and in a boarding House. He was married.
Next door, in another boarding house, "Nash and Sawyer Location- Coos" was a Lizzie McCarty- married- b. 1858- Canada. Since these were the only 2 McCartys, b. Can in Coos in 1880, I believe this MAY have been John and Mary Ann
The 1900 census said they were both here in 1880.
"Lizzie" was working as a "House Help".
Lots of MacNaughtons (originally from Scotland) were living in Ontario in the 1881 Canadian census.
If you can get John's Naturalization papers, from the National Archives, those should tell you where he was born in Canada.
