Seeking women with Civil War soldier ancestor

Any woman age 10 or older who has either (A) a direct, blood-related ancestor who fought honorably as a Union soldier in the Civil War or (B) a direct, blood-related ancestor whose brother was a Union soldier may join the oldest women's hereditary organization in the U.S. This organization is the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic (LGAR), which was formed in 1881. Originally, it was an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), which was the largest Union veterans' organization after the Civil War. With the death of the last Union veteran in 1956, the LGAR became totally independent.

The LGAR is Congressionally chartered. Local chapters are called "circles." The goals of the organization are: (A) to educate members and non-members on the service and sacrifice of Union veterans; (B) to preserve Civil War battlefields as well as artifacts, history, and monuments that relate to Union veterans; (C) to mark and to catalogue graves of Union veterans; (D) to commemorate Memorial Day to honor Union veterans; and (E) to promote patriotism and respect for all American veterans.

The LGAR is currently looking to expand into New Hampshire. As such, it is seeking new members with the goal of forming circles in New Hampshire. It takes 10 women to form a circle. Circles are named after a politician, nurse, spy, soldier, military unit, or battle of the Civil War.

Applicants must provide proof of their relationship from themselves back to a Union veteran as well as the service of the Union veteran in the Civil War.

The national convention of the LGAR will be held in New Hampshire in August, 2005.

The cost of membership is a one-time fee of $10. Annual dues is $15 per year. Please e-mail directly to: or contact K. D. Ashley, National Membership Director, 34465 Crew Road, Pomeroy, OH 45769 (PH: 740-992-7874) (E:
