The History of Carroll County, New Hampshire, by Georgia Drew Merrill (originally published 1889, reprinted since) has a chapter on Tamworth, which includes a few pages of biographical sketches of the Stevenson family. John and James Stevenson married sisters - Abigail and Polly Remick. All I can find on John Stevenson is that he was "a man of shrewd, keen, practicality, and a deacon of the Congregational church." John's father, Thomas Stevenson, moved from Durham to Tamworth before 1785 and purchased 300 acres of land "on an elevated ridge near the Sandwich line, now know as Stevenson Hill." (It is still known as Stevenson Hill.) He died in 1807 and his sons, John and James, inherited the homestead. There's more info on James' family and descendants if you're interested in that line.
