Yesterday I purchased in Albany, CA, an old loose product label reading:

"Beauty Water

There is a photographic reproduction of an unidentified girl's head and shoulders in the center of the label. Is this possibly a likeness of Clara B. Ney, born 14 Jun 1877 Marysville, Yuba Co., CA, died 10 Dec San Benito Co., CA? She was the daughter of John Ney (1842-1914) and Rebecca Catherine Butler (1854-1929). Clara is listed in the 1900 Census data for Butte Township, Siskiyou Co., CA; and the 1920 and 1930 Census data for Oakland, Alameda Co., CA. In 1930, Clara had a husband and wife pair boarding with her, namely William A. and Julia Dayton. William's occupation is shown as manager of a mineral water company. According to one source, "History of the Sacramento Valley California," by Major J. W. Wooldridge, Vol. 3, pp. 301-303. Pioneer Historical Publ. Co., Chicago (1931), following the death of her parents, "Miss Clara B. Ney, who conducts the place during the summer season, is a teacher by profession, connected with the public schools of Oakland." This same account states, "... Ney's Springs are located in a canyon leading off from the grand canyon of the Sacramento River, about five miles south of Sisson (now Mount Shasta City), two miles west of Cantara station, on the Southern Pacific Railroad. ... From another of the springs flows what is called 'Beauty Water,' which has excellent qualities as a shampoo, face wash and lotion, being also used to advantage in the cure of cutaneous diseases."
