I'm looking for some stray children. The 1851 census shows them living as borders with John & Catherine BOSS in Mancetter, Warwick. The children were: Jane DEXTER, age 9 Emma DEXTER, age 7 Ann DEXTER, age 6 Daniel DEXTER, age 4 I believe these children were the younger brothers and sisters of my great grandfather, Thomas Haywood DEXTER. Thomas (and the other children above)'s parents were John DEXTER and Mary Ann (BEECROFT) DEXTER. John Dexter was a hatter. Both were from Warwick. They married in Mancetter in 1831. They may have had a couple of children in 1832-34 - if they did, the children died. In 1834/35 the couple moved to London. The family briefly lived in Pimlico (where Thomas Haywood DEXTER was born) but subsequently settled in Bermondsey. They had several children. I find the family in the 1841 census in London. In the 1851 census I find only the father, John DEXTER, and the two eldest children, Thomas Haywood DEXTER and Henry DEXTER. I find the younger children in Mancetter (as listed above). I do not find the mother. I SPECULATE that the mother died in the late 1840s, and the younger children were sent to Mancetter to live with friends/relatives, while the older children stayed in London with their father. I have been unable to find any family connection between BOSS and DEXTER or BEECROFT. I don't know why the children would be staying with the Bosses, or whatever became of them. Perhaps John/Catherine BOSS, being in their 60s, sent the children off to New Zealand with their daughter, Jane (BOSS) ORCHARD. [My maternal great grandfather was orphaned in Norway and sent off to the US with family friends as a teenager in the 1870s, which is how I came up with this possible scenario.] Does anyone have any evidence of stray DEXTER children coming to NZ with family members? Would anyone have information (or even good theories) as to why these Dexter children were living with the Bosses in 1851? --Dave Dexter Wisconsin, USA Notify Administrator about this message?
