William Caldwell
I am trying to acquire information on a New Zealand American Civil War veteran that I am told was living in Colyton, NZ when he died; in September 1901. The only obit I have found in Papers Past gave his death as early September "1907".
His name was William Caldwell, born in Scotland; participated in the American Civil war, fighting for the Union; after migrating to New Zealand, William became a successful grocer in Greenock for many years, retiring from it after 28 years, in 1879; a resident of Greenock, he was said to have dropped dead in September 1901 during a bowling tournament in Newcastle, New Zealand; in the presence of his wife, still living on Valey Road in Colyton at the time; but according to “The Colonist”, a New Zealand newspaper dated 17 September 1907, William Caldwell died in September 1907.
I have also been told he died in 1901 and was buried in the Fielding Cemetery.
Is there any way you can provide me with information to prove when he died and where he is buried?
Any information you can provide on him and his family will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
James M. Gray
