Accordingly to his obituary, my g-g-g-grandfather, Thomas Dawson, was the orderly to the interpreter at the Battle of Gate Pa. He was in the 3rd Waikato Militia at the time and then transferred to the 1st Waikato Militia a few months later.
He settled in Opotoki after receiving a govt land grant and raised his children there.
