Findmypast has outward passenger lists from the UK.

There is a Mr CH CARTER leaving London on 19 Feb 1914, on the Remuera bound for Wellington, which could be him. He was a miner aged 22.

Could well be him as his WW1 Army records on the NZ National Archives website give his occupation as miner. Born 26 Apr 1891, KIA 3 Jul 1916.
