Hi- my name is Dianne Stone. My gramma's name was Mona Annie McIntee (Brighouse). Mona was the daughter of Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse - son of George and Emma Brighouse (Wilkinson). What I have learned this far is that Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse (TWB)was married and had a son George and a daughter Mona. I'm not sure where Mona was born but I was told she died giving birth to Mona (not sure if that is true). I heard another story that Mona's mother died on a ship bound for Samoa. Thomas had brothers who settled in New Zealand and I am wondering if he too went to New Zealand and whether he married Mona's mother there..or in England. The baby, Mona remained in Samoa until she was 4 years old when she was sent to live with a relative in Liverpool, England. Thomas Wilkinson remained in Samoa to marry a native - Fati Tagamoa. Thomas and Fati had 15 children over the next few years.
The relative Mona was sent to live with became ill and Mona was sent to live with an aunt in Toronto, Ontario, Canada when she was about 16. I believe the aunt may have been Emma Taylor (Brighouse)..possibly a sister of TWB. Emma married Herbert Taylor. At some point she met and married my grampa Ernest Albert McIntee and they lived in the Dunnville area in Ontario.
I have no history on my gramma Mona. I don't know who took care of her in Samoa or why she was sent to England. I don't know where she lived or where she went to school. There are no records of her arriving in Canada on any passenger lists or immigration records that I have been able to access. I know that she was baptised in England in 1921 but I believe that she came to Canada soon afterwards. I don't know if my gramma ever had contact with her father again, once she left Samoa but I did hear that she wrote to a couple of her half-sisters there when she was young. Those sisters have passed away and there are no letters to prove that.
My gramma died not knowing her own mother's name. I have been told that her brother George committed suicide in New Zealand in the 1930's but I have no proof of that. I would really appreciate it if anyone knows anything about my gramma - Mona Annie Brighouse...daughter of Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse and "unknown"...grand-daughter of George and Emma Brighouse (Wilkinson). Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Dianne Stone, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
