My family oral history is that my great grandfather changed our surname from JENSEN to STEWART. He lived in Fiji and Samoa and died in New Zealand. He was born John JENSEN, changed it to John STEWART and then changed his name back to JENSEN.
I am trying to make a connection between a John STEWART (who was in Fiji between 1914-1922) and John JENSEN b. 1891 Marrickville, NSW.
The information I have on John STEWART from his marriage to Filomena RODAN in 1918 in Suva, Fiji is that he was born in Sydney and was 28 in 1918, which means he would have been born around 1890 or 1891. His father was Peter STEWART who was a carner (granary keeper) and mother BERTELSEN.
The only record I can find of a John STEWART or John JENSEN born in New South Wales that matches the details of John STEWART from his marriage certificate is of John JENSEN b. 1891 Marrickville, NSW, Australia.
John JENSEN's parents were Simon Peter JENSEN and Anne Marie BERTELSEN who were married in 1888 in Qld, Australia. They also had a daughter, Mary Magdalene JENSEN b. 1890 who was born in Qld.
I found a death record for a John JENSEN who was born 17 September 1891 and died in 1975 in New Zealand. Not too sure if this is the same person, I guess I won't find out until I order a copy of the death certificate.
Would anyone have information on the above family and if they did change their surname from JENSEN to STEWART.
