Searching for letters, journals, and other personal documents referencing the life and military service of Alexander Herritage Newton, who served as a commissary sergeant with the Twenty-Ninth Connecticut Infantry from 1863-1865. Born in North Carolina, Newton (1837-1921) was the son of a slave father and free mother. After the war he became a minister. He also authored "Out of the Briars: An Autobiography and Sketch of the Twenty-Ninth Regiment Connecticut Volunteers." If you have unpublished materials to share, please contact me.
