I had never heard of any of the early Newsoms in America being married at Chippokes. It appears your wife descends from Thomas Newsom, s/o WIlliam NEwsom Jr. and Anne Sheppard Hart, daughter of Robert Sheppard and Elizabeth Spencer. Thomas is the brother of my GGGGGG-grandfather, John Newsom. AS you know, the brothers married sisters, Thomas married Elizabeth Crawford, John married Sarah Crawford. The sisters were the daughters of Robert Crawford and Elizabeth Carter. Elizabeth was the sole heir of her father, George Carter, from whom she inherited extensive land holdings. George was the s/o WIlliam Carter, born 1600 in England, died 1655 in VA. When in VA, you may want to visit the Rolfe-Warren House. The present house is not the original built by Thomas Warren on property which was originally given to Thomas Rolfe by his Indian grandfather. The interest here is that after the death of Robert Sheppard, his widow, Elizabeth Spencer, mother of Anne Sheppard Hart Newsom, remarried, as his 2nd wife, Thomas Warren, builder of the original house on the property. As I recall, the oeiginal house burnt about 1710, and fell into the basement, where the kitchen was located. The present house was built using bricks from the original building. Of course, you'll be wanting to go to the site of the original land patents of William Spencer, Robert Sheppard, etc, using the map sent to you.
