Ava,

I am interested in hearing more about the Newports who lived in Owen County Indiana. My father, Ralph Edgar Newport, was the son of James Bert Newport and Ollie Ruth Bonnewell Newport. I found out from the 1880 Census that Bert's father was Robert Newport and his mother Eliza Jane Miller. Bern was 2 at the time of that census. I believe that family went on to have 8 children.

Those Newports were Methodists and attended chuch in Vandalia, I believe. The Bonnewells were Nazarenes. I still keep in touch with some of the Bonnewells. Bert worked on the railroads. At some point, he and Ollie moved to Hume, Ilinois, where my parents lived when I was born. Bert and Olllie had 5 children--2 boys and 3 girls. My dad was a middle child. I have contacts with descedants of all those siblings. One died childrless. Bert died in his early 90's the same year of the Space Walk.

My dad, Ralph, died in 1991 at age 89. I have one brother, Gary Lee Newport, who lives in Winston-Salem, NC and he had one son, Brandon Newport, who is married and also lives in North Carolilna. My dad knew how to find the old cemeteries in Owen County and some of the Bonnewells took him there with them to find more information about their ancestors. I believe my brother went there with him one and tape recorded some of my dad's recollections of the people who were buried in Owen County.

I am very interested in any past geneology of the Newports. Years ago there was a National Geographic article about Owen County and I have that issue. It also mentions the name, Freeman, and I recall my dad talking about his Grandpa Freeman. I also have photographs of all 4 of my dad's grandparents.

My husband and I live in Los Angeles, CA. We are both retired--he was a lawyer and I was an educator.

The other side of my family was from Edgar County, IL and we keep in touch with them, too.

How exciting to hear of your interest in the Newport family!
