Bill,
I am descended from David Dennis, the brother of William Dennis Jr. who married Mary Newman. There is a lot of "mistaken" information in circulation about this family.Unfortunately, it has been repeated so many times that it has become gospel.
This is what I have:Mary Newman (Dennis) was baptized 20 May 1798 at the Lutheran Church of Cregarstown, Frederick Co., MD, the daughter of Jacob Newman and Mary Ann (Anna Maria) Kepple. (Church records.) I believe the names Kepple, Helper, Hefler, etc., are probably variants of the same difficult to read German name.(The old records were in German script.)
I don't know for sure when Jacob Newman and Anna Maria Kepple married, but Jacob was on the 1790 census with a couple of sons and had a son in the 10-15 age category for the 1800 census--probably George. This means that they married before 1790.So the marriage you mention of 25 May 1788, in Frederick County, fits pretty well. (I have not seen this record.)
There apparently was a marriage 19 OCT 1795 in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, between a Jacob Newman and a Mary Reed, butthey weren't the parents listed on Mary's baptismal record, and their marrige was too late for them to have had a 10+ year-old son on the 1800 census. In addition, the marriage was in Baltimore Co., not in Frederick Co.
I also noticed that you have Mary's husband, William Dennis Jr., listed as b.1795-Amherst/Nelson Co, VA m.1816 d.1870. This "information" is widely posted on the internet, but, as far as I can tell, William's Dennis family had no connection whatsoever to the Dennises in Amherst/Nelson Co.
In addition, land transactions place William's parents, William and Jane Dennis, in Washington Co., Maryland, in 1792 and 1797, so it is very likely that William was born in Maryland rather than in Virginia.William's application for his military pension also said that he was born in Maryland and his siblings were born either in Maryland or in Ohio.
William Dennis Jr. died 7 Sep 1870, Bearfield Twp., Perry Co., Ohio, and is buried Zion Christian Union Cemetery, Bearfield Twp., Perry Co., Ohio.
