Susie, I have a different slant on how the quilt got to COLORADO. When Ellen Louise Chalfant died I thought maybe the quilt was given to her sister, the sister, Elizabeth Humphrey might have even taken the baby for awhile. Who would take care of the baby until Jacob remarried? Elizabeth Humphrey had 13 children, most of them died (7) as infants but she had a daughter Mary, who married Joseph Stroud, in the 1880 census for Upper Darby, Delaware County, Joseph Stroud is listed, age 35, a butcher, Mary, age 32, Lizzie, age 13, Blanche, age 12, Mary, age 4, Sadie, age 2, also in the household was Franklin Humphrey. age 18, he would be Mary's younger brother. There was another child born to Joseph Stroud and Mary, after 1880, James Stroud. Between 1880 and 1886 (when Joseph Stroud died) the family moved to COLORADO. I thought maybe the quilt was given to Mary by her mother as a going away gift as the mother might never see her daughter again. (Elizabeth Humphrey died in 1887) Joseph Stroud served in the Civil War, he was in Company K. 124th Infantry PA. he was listed as a musician. In COLORADO after Joseph's death Mary filed for Joseph's Civil War pension, the date was 22 Oct 1890, no info as to where in Colorado they were living. I just started researching for my X husband and my son they are HAGEYS, they are from the James Franklin Newlin and Sarah Phipps line, there daughter Elizabeth married James Black Humphrey, their daughter Ellen Humphrey married Joseph Franklin White. I was thrilled to see the picture of you holding up the red and white blocked quilt. It is all so very interesting, maybe we will never know the answers but it great to speculate.
