I am trying to trace the forebears of my father, Thomas Colin Newlands born 15.02.1907 in east London. His father (also Thomas Newlands)was a merchant seaman (believed from South Shields) who ran away to sea in his early teens and worked his way to attain his first mate's ticket with the Shaw Savill company. His family is believed to have come from east Scotland. He married an Essex farmer's daughter (Amy Spackman)and died of peritonitis on the first day of the 1914-18 war. Family legend has it that he was disowned for running away, but we have no firm evidence for that. Any help would be greatly appreciated
