Hello Newlands family.
I was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanganiyka in March 1953.My father was Hugh William Crispin Newlands born in Devon on Oct 24, 1914.His father was Hugh William Cristopher Newlands born in Forress, Scotland. His father was William Newlands, who I believe was the world ploughing champion. As a student at Edinburgh University my father used to spend his holidays at the family farm in Forress, where two aged aunts recounted the family history to him.He used to tell me of ancestors killed at Bannockburn and the other great battles against the English. He also claimed an ancestor was one of the last people burned at the stake for witchcraft in Scotland.
I believe from the posting here from John V Newlands that we may be part of the same branch of the clan.My father's cousin Willie Newlands had the clan offically reinstated about 15 years ago, with tartan and crest, and bought a ruined castle near Montrose which he believed to have belonged to a brach of the clan hundreds of years ago.
I'd be interested to hear from anybody from this branch of the clan.
Mike Newlands
