I am also searching the Newlands in Ross County. My great-great grandfather was born Zachariah Newlan around 1848, in Ross County, I believe. His birth father must have died in infancy, and his mother (Harriet) remarried a Thomas Dillie. They had one son of their own, Cyrus, born about 1853.Thomas also had 2 children from a previous marriage (they are all listed in the 1860 census).
I think this explains why so many Newlands are buried in the Dill cemetery.
Shortly before his death in 1905, Zachariah went to court in Ross County and legally changed his name from Newlan to Dillie.Evidently, he had named some of his children Newlan and some Dillie, and there had been much confusion as a result. He wanted to set things straight.
His wife was Tamson Hartman (1848-1918), daughter of George and Elizabeth Hartman from Vinton County.
Will be coming to Ohio sometime this year, and will be visiting Ross County.Any information will be much appreciated.
