Early KY Newland
Ezekiah Newland, 1769 – 1816 married Millie Douglas, ? – 1810 in Lincoln County, KY on 8 Nov 1791. Ezekiah was the oldest child of John Newland, abt 1743 – 1833 and Mary Margaret Unknown, died 1776.
After the death if Millie Douglas, Ezekiah remarried to Elizabeth Pickett, 1770 – 1842, widow of Joel Settle, 1752 – 1807.Ezekiah married Elizabeth Pickett 23 Jun 1811 in Barren County, KY.Ezekiah and Elizabeth had at least two children, one was a son, Joseph W Newland, born 1816 in Barren County, and died 1895 in Adams County, WA.Elizabeth and first husband, Joel Settle, also had at least two children, one a daughter, Elizabeth Settle, 1804 - ?, married Andrew Whitley, 1784 – 1843, 26 Jan 1826.Andrew Whitley was the son of early KY settler, William C Whitley, 1749 – 1813.William Whitley built what is thought the first brick house in KY and it is now a state shrine. He owned a large amount of land near Crab Orchard, KY, estimated about 2800 acres.William Whitley was killed in the Battle of Thames during the war of 1812, and was buried in a mass grave in Canada.A granddaughter of William Whitley, Esther Whitley, 1818 – 1851 married a Joseph Walker Newland, born about 1816, about 1836.I have not been able to establish if this Joseph Walker Newland is the Joseph W Newland, son of Ezekiah Newland and Elizabeth Pickett though circumstances indicate this is very likely.Ezekiah Newland lived in the Lincoln County area (1791) that was to become Barren County in 1798.Elizabeth Pickett was buried in a Whitley family plot near the William Whitley House. My speculation for the above family scenario is that Elizabeth Pickett Newland had some relationship with the Whitley Family, and that after the death of Ezekiah Newland she came to Lincoln County to live. Her daughter Elizabeth Settle married Andrew Whitley and, most likely, her son Joseph W married Esther Whitley.Barren County, KY is an one hundred plus mile trip from Crab Orchard by today’s roads, and I assume Elizabeth Pickett Newland lived within close proximity of Crab Orchard and the Whitley Family.
In another Whitley – Newland relationship, John Newland, 1784 – 1861, purchased a farm in Lincoln County from what had likely been part of William Whitley’s original land in 1847 and moved his family from Madison County, KY.Two of John Newland'’ sons, Ambrose Dudley and Anderson Christopher acquired property a short distance from the William Whitley House.Anderson C Newland’s second wife, Elizabeth Jane Rayborn, 1827 - ?, is a descendant of a Clark believed to have been in part with William Whitley that came to KY in about 1775.The farms that both Ambrose Dudley and Anderson C Newland lived are now under Cedar Creek Lake.I provided this information in hopes someone will provide information for Joseph W Newland, and if he is the Joseph Walker Newland that married Esther Whitley.I will appreciate any information.
