Elsie Everett, g2 gradau. of Joseph Newlan who was 87 in 1976provided the followin information to Weir H. Bell. "Here is what I know about the Newlans. Copied from a newspaper clipping covering the first Newland reunion held Sept 10, 1933. This reunion was the resut of the coming to Lovington, ILL of the three brothers and one sister, about 1840. They were Mark, William,..Joseph and Mrs. Abe Miller. They came from IN and each bought 80 acres of adjoining land from the government at $1.25 per acre. Thsy rode to Springfield on hosssrse back where they entered the land. This land was located where the Porter, Clark & Atherton farms are now located. (south & west of Lovington." William Newlan was b. c.1815 in OH and he m. Rachel Funk. Mark Newland, m. Mary Funk, Rachel's sister at the home of Jacob Funk. (Source: "NEWLAND DESCENDANTS of John & Margaret" by Weir H. & Ethel J. Bell- limited publication) Another message on this forum suggests the Newland family dropped the s in spelling of their surname due to Civil War concerns. I don't know the ethic background to the Lovington Newlan family. However, if Irish there is a possibility the Newlan and Newlands are related to the Newlin Quaker family of Chester Co.,PA whose immigrant ancestor arrived Philadelphia in 1683. Members of that family also changed the spelling of their surname tradition indicating a scandal within the family involving bigamy of one of its members. My ancestor, Mary Elizabeth Newland [1801-1844] m. John Davis in VA and is related to the Newlands of Frederick Co., VA. Mary d. in White Co., IN Notify Administrator about this message?
