I don't have the connection to your Julia, but I do have quite a few KNOPPELs in my database, including a Frederick KNOPPEL born about 1861-1862 in Philadelphia. He was the brother of my 2-great grandmother Helena KNOPPEL, and the son of Frederick KNOPPEL who was born c1825 in Hanover (Germany). The older Frederick was a well-known confectioner in Philadelphia.
The younger Frederick is living with his parents in 1870 and 1880, but I don't know what happened to him after that time.If you have a death record for the Frederick who married your Julia we may be able to make a connection. He is about the correct age to marry your grandmother.
In the 1900 census, Frederick W KNOPPEL (b Feb 1863) is living as a lodger in Philadelphia and is listed as widowed.Did Julia die before 1900?
I also have an entry from the SSDI for a Fred KNOPPEL, born 8 May 1887 and died in November 1970.Last address was in zip 15601 (Greensburg, Westmoreland Co, PA).Is this someone related to you? That Fred appears in the 1920 census living in Greensburg with wife Annie and children Dorothy (6/PA), Frederick (5/PA) and Helen M (2 7/12/PA).
I also have an SSDI entry & obituary for the younger Fred KNOPPEL born 1915 in Greensburn, PA and died 1998 in Fairfield, California.
Sorry for so many questions, but it is unusual for me to find someone else researching this family ;-)
I have my data online. You can see what I have for Frederick's family at:
