Vern D /////////////////////////////////// Transcribed by D Sardoc /////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Argus Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA 1-5 January 1861 ************************* >>Friday, 4 Jan 1861<< MURDER of SAMUEL T. NEWELL by HORACE SMITH -- About 11 o'clock on the morning of New Year's day, in San Francisco, Horace SMITH, a lawyer of Auburn, in this State, met Samuel T. NEWELL, late publisher of the 'Democratic Signal' of Auburn and killed him almost instantly by stabbing him twice with a knife. SMITH then went to the police office and gave himself up and was incarcerated in the city jail, to await examination. The 'Bulletin' says: "A score of rumors are afloat as to the cause of the difficulty -- we can vouch for none of them. One of them was that NEWELL was paying attention to a young lady who had some property; that SMITH's wife warned the young lady that NEWELL was not a good man -- that he had a wife already, &c.; that this provoked NEWELL to the use of language derogatory to the character of Mrs. SMITH, and that SMITH then determined to be avenged upon the slanderer of his wife. Another was that NEWELL had boasted of his acquaintance with Mrs. SMITH in a way that reflected dishonor upon her, and that SMITH thereupon determined to be avenged. SMITH's wife is said to be the sister of Judge HARDY -- a fact stated to account for the alleged presence of HARDY with SMITH at the station house. Notify Administrator about this message?
