Carolyn: I am not that Wes but I would like to exchange information. I have 2 branches of Wetzels in my maternial line. Both say (not proven) that they were related to the Indian fighter Lewis Wetzel. Both are possable. The first was Jacob Whetsel born about 1800 or so (W)? VA with sons Archibald Whitesel born February 04, 1836 Ohio? and Daniel Henry Whetsel born January 06, 1848 in Jackson County Ohio married April 17, 1874 in Gallia County Ohio to Samantha Angeline Neal. Samantha Neal was a daughter of Thomas J. Neal and Belinda Allison and a grandaughter of Walter Neal born 1786 Bedford Co, VA, also listed as Greenbrier VA and Deborah Arnot born 1787. Walter Neal and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Griffith Landthorn born about 1812 in Virginia were my G-G-G-Grandparents through their daughter Clarenda Neal born 1844 Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio married 1861 Gallia County Ohio to William Boster born 1838 Cincinnati Ohio. The other Wetzel family line is married into my Lawyer family and the Swearingens from Springhill TWP Fayette County PA, the Leatherman and Parker Hurless family in Whiteside County Illinios. The following is from Whiteside County Illinois on Louis Wetzel married to Mary Lawyer. At the moment this bio is all I have giving me the manes of Mary's parents. Her brother Jacob Lawyer born about 1834 Ohio married to a Leah were my G-G-Grandparents. Likely they died in Iowa. Whiteside County ILL Biographies LEWIS WETZELL Portrait & Biographical History of Whiteside Co 1885 "Lewis Wetzel, a farmer, section 17, Hopkins Township, is a son of John and Margaret (Reese) Wetzel, who were natives of Franklin Co., Pa., of German and English descent. They first settled in Ohio and lived there till 1855, when they came to Whiteside County and settled in the township of Genesee, where they lived till their death. He died Sept. 18, 1860, and she Feb. 2, 1882. They had a family of 12 children, namely; Catherine, Daniel, Jacob, John, George, Elizabeth, David, Andrew, Hannah, Joseph, Margaret and Lewis. Mr. Wetzel was born in Stark Co., Ohio, June 3, 1837. He received a common-school education and came to Whiteside County with his father when he was 18 years old. He lived in Genesee Township till the fall of 1861, when he purchased a farm of 160 acres on section 17, Hopkins Township, where he settled and has since lived. He is now the owner of 206 acres, most of which is tillable. He has erected some very fine buildings on his farm. Mr. Wetzel was married in Sterling, Ill., March 25, 1858, to Mary, daughter of Frederick and Catherine Lawyer, natives of Germany, who had four children, - Jacob, Mary, William and Frank. Mary (Mrs. W.) was born in Stark Co., Ohio, March 1, 1836. Mr. and Mrs. W. are the parents of four children - Rebecca E., Delilah J., John G. and Rollin E. Mr. Wetzel has been Overseer of Highways and School Director. In politics he is indentified with the Republican party." Hopefuly there is some connection here.
