Hi Brad,
No idea about the Indian connection. But with the scarce information I've seen regarding Ottoway's father's wives -- 2, 3, or 4, depending on whether the Arkansas records I mentioned earlier are of his or not -- one never knows.
As to Amanda Wise:I've not attempted to make the connections, but recall that Ottaway's grandfather, William NEWBOLD [recorded as NEWBOLT on the 1850 Census in Johnson County, and who died there in 1856] was married to one Alice Wise. Also, and I know I didn't mention this, William's sister, Phoebe NEWBOLD, who accompanied her brother from North Carolina thru Tennessee to Johnson County, was first married to one Harney Wise, who must have been a relative, perhaps a brother, of Alice Wise. They had a son Ira Wise, born in 1824, who married one Catherine Howerton.I do not know who the children of Ira and Catherine were, but perhaps Amanda was one of them.[The Howerton name is also inter-related with the Johnson County NEWBOLDs -- for instance, Phoebe's second husband was Benjamin Howerton].
Anyway, I suspect that is where the story of shared ancestry traces back to -- only a couple generations, and not all the way back to the first Thomas NEWBOLD.I have not encountered the Wise surname at all in Maryland/Delaware NEWBOLDs.It only appears with the North Carolina branch in Onslow County in the late 1700s/early 1800s with the marriage of William NEWBOLD to Alice Wise, and Phoebe NEWBOLD to Harney Wise.
Anyway, would be most appreciative of any further info you uncover in communicating with Charles Robert NEWBOLD's descendants.
Later,
Cree
