In reading your posting, I find much of your information concerning John Newell, his family and children match extremely closely to "my" John Newell.
"My" John Newell was born either 1806 or 1808 in County Down, Ireland.Married to Nancy Hanks.John Newell died 12/20/1883 and is buried in the Epworth Rural Cemetary (near Dubuque Iowa).
Children were William Frances, James, Margaret Jane, Charles, Robert, Sarh Jane, Marie, & John.
William Frances married Susan Ann Ganfield 12/1/1869 in Cascade Iowa.
Children were John Thomas, Samuel Oscar, Eliza Jane, Francis William, Susie Marie, Faith, Hope, Charity, Little Nanny, Elizabeth Minnie, Charles Edgar, Arthur, Howard, and Margaret May.
I think we may be related.
John Thomas Newell is my grand father.Samuel Oscar married Mary Ann Distel and had 7 children:Marie Opal, Francis Philip, Gladys Ann, Vina Clara, Rosyln Hannah, Samuel Jacob and Nina Newell.
Vina Newell married Alfred William Ascheman and had nine children. From an obituary of Brother Linus Thomas Ascheman...the brother/sister survivors were listed including a Donna Chevalier.I suspect that that is you??
??? Are you the same Donna Chevalier who also posted on genealogy.com and Rootswebe in year 2000 concerning John Newell??
In any case I am very much willing to share info.
P.S.My John Newell left LIverpool on board the ship "Martha" and arrived in New Orleans in May of 1847.I have found his citizenship "Declaration of Intent" dated 10/3/1849 filed at the Dubuque County courthouse. Also found him and his family in the 1856 Iowa census for Taylor Township, Dubuque county, Iowa
If you would like to continue this discussion via email and not via the forum, please let me know and I will send you my email address.
Jim
