Surname NEW Y-DNA Testing Project
The Surname NEW Y-DNA Testing Project has been collecting data for several years now and, although the name is not common, there are 22 of us in the Project.A few of us (including myself) are English, there is one Canadian and one Australian, with the rest American. Two have the surname NEU.
The surprise is that 8 of the Americans match and the presumption is that they all descend from Richard NEW c.1620-c.1681 who came to Virginia in 1637/8.Two or three of them have good paper trails back to Richard, and some others thought they did but have trouble proving it, and for the remainder the test result was unexpected and welcome news.Within this group we are now discerning 3 separate branches.Possible connections in Paulding Co., GA, are now interesting the genealogists.
But beware - a ninth person claims a descent from Richard but doesn't match! The other problem is that we haven't yet found Richard's ancestral stock in England or where-ever he came from.Nor for any other ancestors of the Americans tested, such as John Foster NEW (came to Virginia in 1761).The problem is the dearth of English volunteers for testing.I fear that they are comfortable with the knowledge that they "know where they come from"!
I come from a well-documented NEW family of Evesham in Worcestershire descending from a James NEW c.1655-1725.Just 10 miles away in Northway, Glos., William NEW is recorded as a Taxpayer in 1327.I was born and bred just 10 miles away from there more than 600 years later.Myself and 2 distant cousins have been tested and match, but a representative of a NEW family from Defford, Worcestershire, just 8 miles from Evesham, has been tested and doesn't match.I have genealogies of two other Worcestershire NEW families, one of Worcester itself and the other of Ripple, but know of no male-line descendants today.
The Canadian result is representative of William NEW who left the Isle of Wight (Hampshire) for Philadelphia in 1817, and the Australian represents John NEW c.1750 of Ramsbury, Wiltshire.
