Thos. Nevin-Co. Fermanagh & Tyrone, Ireland to Missouri & Ohio
Posted by: Nick Cimino (ID *****4746) Date: November 24, 2007 at 14:11:14
  of 397

My Nevin ancestor was Thomas Nevin born between 1790 to 1810 in County Fermanagh and died in Schuyler County, Missouri in 1861. My family tradition was that that they were from Rafintan in County Tyrone. Rafintan is a townland in County Fermanagh near Fivemiletown on the County Tyrone border.

Here are many records on Nevins in County Fermanagh and Tyrone. Would love to discuss Irish research and compare notes with NEVIN and Irish researchers.

!NAME: NEVIN
1. Scottish and Irish (Leinster): reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Naoimhín, a patronymic from a personal name representing a diminutive of naomh ‘saint’.
2. Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Cnáimhín ‘son of Cnámhín’, a Galway name, or Ó Cnáimhín, a Munster name meaning ‘descendant of Cnámhín’, a byname meaning ‘little bone’, used to refer to a thin man.
Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4

!BIRTHPLACE:" Refenton Co., Northern Ireland some connection with Tyrone" was the written note from Aline Cavanagh but I had no luck in finding Refenton in any gazetteer or atlas. I did find Rafintan in the Ireland Townland Database: http://www.seanruad.com/cgi-bin/iresrch
I think "Rafintan" is the correct spelling:
Townland: Rafintan; Acres: 207; County: Fermanagh; Barony: Magherastephana; Civil Parish: Aghalurcher; Poor Law Union: Lisnaskea; Province: Ulster.
The following are records from the Townland of Rafintan, County Fermanagh, Ulster (Northern Ireland) and other various Nevin records from County Fermanagh and Tyrone. I believe that our Thomas Nevin and family were from the Townland of Rafintan which is near Fivemiletown in County Tyrone.

!CENSUS: 1901 County Fermanagh, Rafintan Townland No. 9 on Form B
Anthony Nevin, Farmer age 51 and his wife Margaret age 38 are listed with a daughter Isabella age 15 and son, William age 2. I am presuming that this is the same couple as described in the marriage above. The wide gap in ages of the two children would suggest that Isabella's mother died and Anthony remarried to Margaret (Maggie Martin?) and together Anthony and Maggie had William. Further investigation of the marriage record is needed to confirm the ages of Anthony and Margaret at marriage. [Nick Cimino, November 2007]

Name & Surname Relation Age Sex Marriage
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Anthony Nevin Head 51 M Farmer Married
Margaret Nevin wife 38 F Married
Isabella Nevin daughter 15 F not married
William Nevin son 2 M
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The family is listed as belonging to the Church of Ireland and all were listed as born in County Fermanagh. Anthony Nevin's house is further described on Form B1 as a First Class private dwelling with 9 outbuildings on the property. It was constructed of either stone, brick or concrete and the roof was either slate, iron or tiles. There were ten rooms occupied by the family of four and there were five windows in the front of the house. Anthony was the landholder for his own dwelling. Anthony Nevin was also the landholder for the Third Class dwelling occupied by Andrew Kirkpatrick.
Also in Rafintan townland in the 1901 census is the widow Mary Nevin age 60, occupation farmer. Mary was residing in a Third class dwelling with her niece, Lizzie Montgomery, age 16, occupation seamstress. Mary Nevin was born in Co Tyrone and her niece was born in County Fermanagh. Mary and her niece were members of the Church of Ireland. Mary Nevin was the landholder for her dwelling. Mary's husband could be either Galbraith or Richard Nevin based on their presence in Rafintan townland in 1862 as shown in the Griffith's valuation above. The correspondence below describes the wife of Galbraith Nevin as Mary Baxter so it is most likely that Mary Nevin in the 1901 census is the same Mary Baxter.
Lizzie Montgomery, age 16 in 1901 [born about 1885] is possibly the daughter of William James Montgomery and Elizabeth Nevin who were married 31 Jul 1883 in Colebrooke Church of Ireland.

PRONI should be able to provide a copy of the lease. The following link will provide something towards an understanding of the leases of the day - they haven't changed that much!

I have an relative interest in LUCINDA NEVIN b. abt. 1853, d 24 Feb 1877 in Derrycullion, dau. of GALBRAITH NEVIN (farmer) and MARY BAXTER of Rafintan. Lucinda m. CHRISTOPHER TRIMBLE in Aghalurcher Parish Church 04 May 1876.
Christopher and Lucinda had a dau LUCINDA (aka MARY JANE - don't ask me why the complete change from her given name - I still have to research that one!) b. 22 Jan 1877 d. 07 Nov 1886. (Note that her mother died a month after giving birth to her dau. who, herself, died some 10 years later along with her 2 stepsisters.) A sad story - Christopher outlived 3 wives - Lucinda Nevin being the first - and d 1934.
Is there a relationship between Galbraith and Thomas Nevin - brothers?
