Just a suggestion.
Nevers sounds a lot like de Nevers which is a French Canadian name not very well known as its full description is Boisvert dit de Nevers. About 45,000 French Canadians were recruited into mainly the northern armies for the civil war. There seems to be a coincidence there.
A fairly large percentage of these Canadians stayed to take advantage of land grants and other benefits and did not return home.
Researching these folks can be very tricky, the young guys may have modified their age, may sometimes be recruited as a replacement for a Northerner. How the person is recorded depends on the unit itself.
Just a thought about Nevers which I have not seen as an English name yet, but it may exist.
