George W NEVELS or George W NEWELL, KY (continued, pg 3)
Posted by: Rita Gibbs (ID *****9200) Date: February 25, 2010 at 19:18:44

Before I move on to the 1830 US Federal Census for Pulaski, KY, let me back up a moment and toss something else out to you regarding the parentage of my ggg-grandfather, George W NEVELS...

Through process of elimination, I believe George W's parents could be as follows:

Samuel NEWELL SR and Jane MONTGOMERY are eliminated due to:

1) their ages in 1814; Samuel born in 1754 would have been age 60, and Jane born in 1764 would have been age 50. True, it's possible as seen from other families in genealogy research, but

2) Jane MONTGOMERY either died in 1848 (per Rejection Record of Revolutionary War Pension) or 1844 (per Owen County Probate of Jane's estate). I'm inclined to go along with the Probate record date. This record lists her heirs as: John NEWELL, Joseph NEWELL, William NEWELL, Samuel NEWELL, James B NEWELL, Ananer EVANS, James EVANS, and Jesse EVANS.

I believe John is John Montgomery, Joseph is Joseph Black, and William is William Tell...her sons. Her son, Samuel NEWELL, died in 1841 with her husband, therefore, the Samuel mentioned in Probate could be his heir and Jane's grandson. The James B NEWELL I'm unsure of as of yet, but feel he, too, is a grandson...haven't figured out the relationship yet. I think that Ananer EVANS, James EVANS, and Jesse EVANS are probably grandsons of Jane and children of Jane's daughter, Dorcas Evans NEWELL, who died in 1821. Just a thought and not a documented fact yet.

No mention is made in the Probate of Jane MONTGOMERY of George W NEVELS/NEWELL although he was still living in 1844/1848.

Ref: http://www.owen.in.us/owenhist/owen.htm#04

3) Samuel NEWELL SR and Jane MONTGOMERY had no male children on the 1820 Census between ages 0-10 years.

John M NEWELL is also eliminated as parents of George W NEVELS as John Montgomery and Margaret BEATTY did not marry until about 1820 and John had no children listed on the 1820 Census.

Landon P NEWELL JR and Margaret NICHOLS -- a possibility, but probably not. Landon P had three male children on the 1820 Census between ages 0-10 years. The only ones I've found listed under other family trees though were Jeremiah, b. 1814; Hardin Bruce, b. 22 August 1815; and Solomon, b. 13 May 1818. I had thought that Jeremiah was an error I found on someone else's tree since he was also born in 1814 like George W, but then I found Jeremiah on 1840 Census for Pulaski, KY.

John NEWELL (Landon's brother) -- a possibility as John has one male child between ages 0-10 years on the 1820 Census. However, I did not find this John NEWELL on the 1830 Census in Pulaski County, so he probably moved elsewhere. I haven't checked on him further yet and have no other information. However, he probably isn't George W NEVELS father as George would have only been age 16 in 1830 and I can't imagine him being left behind in Pulaski County.

Samuel NEWELL JR -- quite possibly the father of George W NEVELS, but I haven't found much on Samuel JR either at this point to make a connection.

Now, on to the 1830 Census for Pulaski Co, KY...

I haven't made a connection yet with Tempy NEWELL, but did see a Temperance NEWELL also on 1840 Census.

Slaves owned in 1840 by George NEWELLS (5), William M NEWELL (3), Temperance NEWEL (11), Joseph NEWELL (18), Jeremiah NEWEL (5), Landon NEWELL (11), Hardin NEWEL (14), Samuel NEWELL JR (14), and Montgomery NEWELL (3).

NOTE: Another name similarity -- In 1860 Census, George NEVIL has a Montgomery NEVIL, age 16, born about 1844 in Indiana, residing in the home. As various children in the NEWELL families carried the middle name of MONTGOMERY, it would appear they were named after the elder Jane MONTGOMERY (maiden name). In addition, as this 16-year-old Montgomery carries the same name as given to other NEWELL members, it would appear that he and George W NEVELS have a connection to the NEWELL family. Also, some of the NEWELL family members are found in Indiana about 1840...Samuel NEWELL SR and Jane MONTGOMERY, for example.

4 fw females, age 20-30
1 fw female, age 50-60
1 fw female, age 80-90

Image 12, Line 1 indicates 9 slaves owned; 2 persons in Agriculture, 1 person in Manufacturing and Trade; then Samuel NEWEL, age 86, as a Pensioner for Revolutionary War or Military Services.

In Image 11, Robert McCULLY, is the one with 1 male and 1 female members in the age group 80-90. David KERR whom is on Line 1 has none. Therefore, I feel that Samuel NEWELL SR and Jane MONTGOMERY were actually living with Robert McCULLY and not David KERR as indicated on the census.

I'm just not sure yet which daughter of Samuel NEWELL SR and Jane MONTGOMERY was married to Robert McCULLY.
