Your grandmother was my great-grandfather's sister. Here's what I have on her:
I have her as Sophie who married Frank Riehle. She's the daughter of James Neubauer and Frances Hoch. Unfortunately this is the family I'm having trouble with.My information about Sophie/Sophia is from a letter from a cousin, and I haven't verified any of it.
James Neubauer is our immigrant ancestor. He came from Bohemia about 1890.According to his death certificate he was born 17 June 1872 in Bohemia and he died 01 July 1946 in Orleans Township, Winneshiek, Iowa. This is rural Cresco, IA.He died of coronary thrombosis and was a farmer.I have not found a record of his parents or anything yet.
Frances Hoch was the daughter of Frank Hoch, but I don't know her mother's name.According to her death certificate, she was born 01 Dec 1878 in Iowa and she died on 14 Aug 1956, about a month after my mother was born. She died of hypertensive heart disease and obesity was a contributing factor.
My great-grandfather was Sophie's brother, Vince. He was a professional violinist. They apparently had quite a large family though I don't have all the names of the siblings in front of me.
From what I've been told, James Neubauer spoke both high and low German, and was quite proud of this fact.I have a possible tie-in to a Neubauer family in Chicago from a wedding anniversary announcement.
Our family pronounces Neubauer "Niebower", though it's unclear why.Probably some accent thing. :)I'll probably be visiting my grandmother (who's still in Cresco) in the next couple of weeks, and I'll see if I can sit down with my grandfather's brother and talk to him about the family more.
Most of the family church records I've found have been at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cresco, IA. I hope this helps!
Tiffany
