I’m descended from both the Andress and Nettles lines you’re inquiring about so I’ll take a shot at giving a partial response to your question. My understanding is incomplete and I welcome comments and corrections.
When discussing the Joseph Nettles family, the “Seniors” and “Juniors” get a bit mixed up so I’ll refer to their DOB for clarity.
Joseph Nettles b. 1776 (AKA “Old Daddy Joe”) first married Mary Thornley. This marriage produced Joseph b. 1799 (AKA “Little Daddy Joe”), James, Mary (AKA Polly), and Elizabeth (AKA Betsy). Joseph Nettles b. 1776 then took a second wife, Elsie Nicola. I don’t know whether Mary Thornley died or there was a divorce involved. At any rate, Joseph Nettles b. 1776 and Elsie Nicola had 8 children, among them a son named Malachi.
Now let’s detour into the parentage of Joseph Nettles b. 1776. I believe his father is the William Joseph Nettles b. ca 1732 in SC and who married Elizabeth Perdue in Darlington District, SC. Some circumstantial evidence and Nettles family notes point to this being the case. Trouble is, I haven’t yet seen/found conclusive proof of this. Help on this point from anyone reading this posting would be greatly appreciated.
William Joseph Nettles b. ca 1732 in SC had 4 sons who went to Alabama – Joseph, Malachi, Benjamin, and Zachariah. As noted above, I believe this Joseph to be Joseph Nettles b. 1776.
The reason for my detour into the parentage of Joseph Nettles b. 1776 is your statement that a Malachi Nettles b. 1769 married Elizabeth Singleton. IF this Malachi Nettles is a brother of Joseph Nettles b. 1776, that’s one more link in the chain to finding proof of direct lineage to William Joseph Nettles b. ca 1732. Furthermore, I’m wondering if Elizabeth Singleton is a sister of Nancy Ann Singleton who married Stephen Andress. So far, Nancy Ann Singleton has been a dead-end for me. Any identifiable siblings of Nancy Ann Singleton are helpful in establishing parentage for both of ‘em. The generations align. But I digress.
OK, back to the issue at hand. Stephen Andress’ and Nancy Ann Singleton’s son Isaac married Mary (AKA Polly) daughter of Joseph Nettles b. 1776 and Mary Thornley.
Stephen Andress’ and Nancy Ann Singleton’s daughter Harriett married Malachi, son of Joseph Nettles b. 1776 and Elsie Nicola. Notes from the Nettles family show that Malachi & Harriett moved to Texas.
I don’t have any info about Andrew Nettles, Sarah J. Andress, George ___(?), or Elizabeth ___(?)
I have a question though. I read your posting as stating that Malachi & Mary’s grandfather is George Nettles, which means George Nettles would be the father of Joseph Nettles b. 1776. What is the background or documentation that points to George Nettles as the father of Joseph Nettles b. 1776? Any info you can share with me regarding this George Nettles would be gratefully appreciated.
I’ll note that posting # 222 on the Nettles forum, plus follow-ups, provide a lot of helpful info. That posting identifies a George Nettles as the father of William Joseph Nettles b. 1741. It’s noted that I show William Joseph Nettles being born ca 1732. The 1741 date fits better with some timelines i.e. his marriage date, so at some point I’ll reexamine the Nettles family notes in my possession that led me to the 1732 date. Census records should be helpful in this regard.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds and can add additional information.
