Do you have reason to believe that your ancestors were African-American?
There are several African-American Nettles lines. Some Nettles did simply "take" the last name of the slave master (as most slaves did), but, as in the case of my great-grandfather Nettles, (and in the case of many, many other slaves), the "master" was also the blood father to the plantation children.
During and after slavery, some of the slaves who had more European blood than African blood were able to "pass" for White. They married other White people and went on about their lives, raising their children and children's children as White.
So, to answer your question, it's possible. It's more possible then most people think.
