William Thomas Nethery
WILLIAM THOMAS NETHERY was the third child born to George D. Nethery and Louisa Griffin Nethery.He was born in northern Granville County, N. C., near the N.C. - Va. border, on December 9, 1869.Two older siblings were Anna Nethery and James Daniel Nethery.Two younger siblings were Robert Howard Nethery and John Walter Nethey, the latter dying of tuberlosis at age 19 in 1898.
Tom Nethery, as he was called all of his life, was a farmer by profession.He never owned any land, like his father before him, with the exception of being trustee for his two oldest daughters, by their inheritance of approximately 43 acres of land from the inherited estate of their deceased mother.This land was sold early on in order to provide much-needed financial support for the family.

Wilson and Amy Hester Wilson of the Stovall community of Granville County.The area where the Wilsons lived was called "Wilson Town" because of so many by this surname who lived in the area.Tom and Mattie were the parents of three children, Dora Frances Nethery born in 1891, Martha May Nethery born in 1893, and George Alfred Nethery born in 1895.All three of these siblings were born in Mecklenburg County, Va. near Taylor's Ferry on the southside of the Roanoke River.When he was three years old, George Alfred Nethery died in his father Tom's arms, suffering from the croup.The doctor had been sent for, but he came too late to save this young boy.The death of George Alfred, as an infant, grieved Tom Nethery till the end of his life.In the same year that his only son died, Tom's wife Mattie died also.Double grief for this father and his two young daughters.

Nethery, in December, 1899, Tom Nethery and daughters, brother Jim Nethery and family, brother Bob Nethery, and their mother and old maid aunt, Louisa Nethery and Martha Nethery, moved to the Harris Crossroads area of Vance County, N. C., some five miles north of Henderson, N. C.The date was January1, 1900.
