If you have an HULET in your searches
My name is Philippe Hulet de Limal, I am living on the border between France, Belgium and Luxembourg but I was born in Limal in Walloon Brabant at around 20 miles south of Brussels. ALL MY ANCESTORS ARE FROM THIS AREA!!
I am sorry, the majority of the genealogists are thinking the Huguenots were persecuted in France only, I understand very well they were marked by the St. Bartholomew Massacre done on the 24th August 1572, the day before the St. Louis, day of the King of France, the persecuted Huguenots were also from the 17 provinces which were actual Holland and Belgium. Only the south of the actual Belgium, let Wallonia was persecuted by the Spanish Jesuits with at their head the King Philip II and the Duke of Alba during the years 1568 to 1572 essentially. Alba was very cruel, 50000 Huguenot families quitted Wallonia during these 4 years for countries where Huguenots were accepted, let Holland, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, England, Ireland, Jersey, Guernesey, but their final issue was the promissory land, AMERICA.
In the most of the cases, it was not the generation who was gone out Wallonia who was going to the U.S. but one or 2 generations later, it is the reason it is difficult to say with exactitude from where they were coming and some of them or a part of family converted to catholic religion again to be able to return in their villages.
Since 1969 I am working on the history of the HULET family and I can say that that all the names you are pronouncing YOULETT, let Hul(l)et(te), Hewlett, Howlett, Hughlett, Hulit, etc, are coming from the same name HUWELET which is the older surname of the family. It is in the years around 1580, 1600, the name is become HULET, never before you will see such name here except from some English genealogists who are thinking the name HULET is coming from the name of a knight, Johannes de HULEST, a friend ofDuke Henri II of Brabant, who were going together with William the Conqueror in England in 1066.
OUR COMMOUN ANCESTOR IS SIMON DE MON dictus HUWELET who was living in Walloon Brabant and being abt 25 yo in 1360. I am knowing his origins but that will be the subject of a book where I will trace the history of our family since 220 PC up to now. It is evidend that all information I can receive essentially about this period of troubles will help to find the origin of all our cousins from America. You can write to me at huletdelimal at yahoo.com, I will answer to everybody as by e-mail as on this forum.
I wish to add that our family has coat of arms with wolven feet which sometimes are changing of color, but the wolven feet are important. These arms are remembering the origins of the family which certainly is not issued from Johannes de Hulest, dominus of Hulst in the north of Brussels, Noord-Brabant.
I hope we will be able to work together to find the missing links between your families and mine.
