Hallo Hennie,
I have found some information on Nanning Jacobs Groetsema:
He was born on 7 October 1868. He arrived in New York on 5 July 1886 on the ship "S.S.Schiedam", at age 17. This ship left the port of Amsterdam. The mainfest says that he was going to Roseland, Illinois (near Chicago).
He married "Hilkje Koning" on 17 October 1900 in Portage Township, County of Kalamzoo, Michigan:
Nathaniel Groetsema and Hilkje Koning
Hilkje was a daughter of: Harmen Jan Koning
In the 1910 bevolkingsregister (census), Nanning and Helen are living in Portage Township, Kalamzoo County, Michigan. They have two children: Tracey P., age 8; Herman, age 5; both born in Illinois. Nanning is a "celery farmer" (selderij boer).
In the 1920 census: Living in Dent Township, San Joaquin County, California. Nanning is a retail merchant for groceries (kruidenier), and they now have another son, Clarence, age 5 who was born in Michigan. So, that means between 1914-1920 the family moved from Michigan to California.
In the 1930 census: The family was living in Ripon Township, San Jaoquin County, California. Nanning was a janitor in a public school. Herman and Clarence were still living at home.
There were other Groetsema families in Chicago, Illinois and Groetsema families in the area of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
I think that the Groetsema families came from provincie Groningen to America.
Now that you have Nanning birth date maybe you can find his geboorte akte and find out who his parents are.
Check www.rootsweb.com for more information about Groetsema families.
I hope this helps!
John
