Galusha Name/History
Sorry for being so late in responding. Finally got a new password which would allow me to respond. Regarding the GALUSHA name. We were French Hugenots and it is believed that Daniel (1) arrived in the United States at age 7 from the Isle of Jersey where he was born. (There is a story that he sailed from Wales, and it is quite possible that in the trade route from Wales, to the Isle of Jersey, to America, that he came on a ship as a cabin boy and jumped ship in America and proceeded to the Hugenot settlement in Mass.) His birth was verified after he was captured in the French & Indian War and died in Montreal, Canada. We do not know if he is buried under the Cathedral there or if his grave was moved and lost in the movement of those graves for the Cathedral to be built. There are many similar spellings of Galusha in France. I also was in the Netherlands trying to make air connections when the person said, "Oh, Galusha, that is a Dutch name." Daniel was referred to as "Dutch Galusha" in some records. Many of the French Hugenots took refuge in the Netherlands before they left for America. It is also believed that Daniel, at age 7, landed in the French Hugenot settlement North of Boston, where he established the name of all descendents in America. They are over 80 documented spellings of Galusha by our historian, Janet Helgemoe. She has written a book, which is out of print, and was anticipating another edition in the future. She gave me permission to use her data for the Galusha of Nebraska book which includes the first 5 generations of the Galushas in America and then the 6th generation of the Galushas in Nebraska. If I can help anyone with connections I am willing to try at no cost to any cousin. I am retired now so have time to work on it with the many resources I have available. All data on the Galushas of Nebaska is stored at the W.Dale Clark in Omaha, NE.
