Kniphuisen Groningen>Clymer, NY
I would like to make contact with anyone researching the name KNIPHUISEN / KNIPHUIZEN / KNIPHUYSEN / KNIPHAUSEN.
My 3 great grandparents are Evert Frank KNIPHUIZEN and Annegian Pieters/Peters VAN DYKE.They were married in Holland May 18, 1840.They came to the U. S. aboard the Katherine Jackson, which sailed from Amsterdam and arrived in New York May 17, 1848.Their city of origin was Alrum, Gronigen, Netherlands.Evert was 35 and a carpenter.Anna was 33.They had 3 children at the time they immigrated.Pieter (Peter) born October 14, 1841, Franke (Frances) born around 1845 and Freerk (Frank) born April 7, 1845.They settled in Clymer, Chautauqua Co. NY and changed the name to KNIPHUISEN.They had 2 more children Oscar born around 1848 and Alice born March 5, 1850.Evert died July 19, 1851 and Anna died April 30, 1855.The children were split up and went to live with different families.
Peter KNIPHUISEN married Lena MEERDINK and had 7 children.I am descended from this family.
I’m not sure what happened to Frances KNIPHUISEN.She may have married a man by the last name of KOOMAN.There is a Frances KOOMAN 1845-1923 buried near Peter KNIPHUISEN in the Holland Cemetery in Clymer, NY.Several family members told me that the KOOMAN family is related, but no one can remember how.I have a picture of Peter KNIPHUISEN and his wife.On the back someone wrote “my mother’s brother”.This photo had to come from Frances’ family since Alice didn’t have any surviving children.
Frank KNIPHAUSEN was in the Civil War, 112th NY Infantry. His pension record lists his name as KNIPHUYSEN and KNIPHAUSEN.In all other records and on his tombstone it is KNIPHAUSEN.He married his first wife in Oct 1871 in Daviess Co. Missouri.Frank lists 3 children in his pension records: Edmund M. born August 20, 1873, Orpha F. born May 10, 1876, and Robert Nicolas born November 13, 1883.He married 2nd Emma J. Stratham on April 12, 1886 in Leadville, Lake Co. Colorado. They never had any children. He died June 12, 1907 and is buried in Leadville.I also found an Elizabeth KNIPHAUSEN who attended school with Edmund (Ed) and Orpha. She may have been another daughter that died.
I don’t know what happened to Oscar KNIPHUISEN.My grandmother told me one of the KNIPHUISENs moved to Chicago and dropped the K from the name and possibly changed the rest of the spelling.
Alice KNIPHUISEN married Garret TECRONEY.They didn’t have any surviving children.
I did find a KNIPHUIZEN family on the Dutch Archives site www.-lias.rad.,archief.nl/genlias/.I know they are still adding information to this site.I found a Melle Freerks KNIPHUIZENof Zoutkamp, Groningen married Sep 14, 1839 in Baflo to Catharina Klaasens KLUNDER.Melle’s parents are Freerk Melles KNIPHUIZEN and Aafke Everts FRIK.I wonder if they are Evert Frank KNIPHUIZEN’s parents, the name Evert coming from his mother and Freerk (Frank) coming from his father.
If anyone is descended from any of the people above or knows someone who is researching this name please respond to this message or e-mail me privately at [email protected]
Thanks
Marlene (Hatch) Markotan
