Most of the names on this list were gleaned from that most useful of websites, www.scotsfind.org. The “NeSmith” names listed there are many and of many spellings. The spellings are spelled exactly (I am confident) as the spellings in the source documents. Going through the files in that website, I had to start a spelling list for my own use. I added a few names gleaned from other sources, and here it is.
Knyfesmythe* - Although listed among the Naesmyth spellings in www.scotsfind.org, I personally believe that this is an occupational surname, such as “Goldsmith” or “Blacksmith,” rather than a variant spelling of Naesmyth. Another website still under construction, http://www.surname-origins.com/pages/index.htm, purportedly lists the name “Knyfesmythe” under “occupational surnames” but I have not been able to discover the secret to searching that large document.
If you know of other ways this name is spelled, please let me know so I may add to the list.
