ALAN!Interesting! Yes, the name Reid has many variations, any one of which is correct. William used Reed when he arrived in Upper Canada in the late 1780's. But some loyalist regiment lists have Reide, Read so we must assume they are interchangeable! I would love to see the info on that Nesbit line especially if you have a note somewhere of a Nancy (Nauncy,Nauncey,Nanny) marrying a William Reed (Read Reid Reide). In fact I would probably come down there (I assume you are in the States) and give you a jar of my home-made pickles!! There are a lot of people trying to find out definitive stuff about this founding pioneer family. A fellow named Bob Holden wrote a comprehensive book about them but I have not seen it. I am trying to get myself a copy. It was called "Family, Yours Mine and Ours" I think. Another Reed researcher Bob Campbell from Kingston Ontario thinks Holden answers a lot of the questions.I could see it in the library but I am possessive about these things! I am just afraid that the information currently being accepted about a William Reed who first setled in Nova Scotia as a Loyalist and was from the Carolinas is not the same William Reed who settled in Ontario and who my traditions hold was with Butler's Rangers, taken prisoner and escaped. I have not seen definitive proof so that's why I want more info on Nancy, his wife (?) so I can link him conclusively to a particular place and family. Another clue I have been pursuing is the wife of William and Nancy's son John, Esther Etherley (Ethey, Eatherley, etc). She was apparently born in the States too and some people have her marrying before they fled and actually arivng here with John and one or two children. Have you seen any Etherleys in your research travels? I am just beginnng this on-line research stuff. I did things the old fashioned way as a teen and young woman. Now as middle aged (almost) I finally join the high-tech age. I live just a few miles from the place the Reeds settled here in Ontario, at the mouth of the Moira River, Bay of Quinte, north end of Lake Ontario. My father's family (Reids-changed the spelling afew generations back to be "different" from their cousins!) have been here since then. I am the descendent of multiple loyalist lines, on both sides. It's late and I hope I haven't made any mistakes. Contact me on my email address if you prefer. You never know though if someone else reading this might fill in a clue!
